Richard Krajicek awards scholarships to youngsters supported by the Smurfit Kappa Foundation
On Friday, October 10th 2014, Richard Krajicek, former Wimbledon champion, awarded scholarships to neighbourhood youngsters who stand out in a positive way on the Krajicek playgrounds . Over 200 guests were present at Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, for an inspiring and sporty day.
Partly due to the contribution of the Smurfit Kappa Foundation, 25 of these talented youngsters are able to study. The Smurfit Kappa Foundation supports the mission of the Richard Krajicek Foundation to boost sports activities for youngster in districts where possibilities are limited. Exemplary behavior, helpfulness and self-commitment are the criteria to be selected. The scholarship winners mainly come from places where Smurfit Kappa plays an active role in the area.
On behalf of the Richard Krajicek Foundation the certificates were handed out to the scholarship winners . A scholarship is an opportunity for training through an educational program that allows young people to develop themselves. In return, they are committed to a minimum of 100 volunteer hours in and around playgrounds . This works on both sides .
The neighborhood gets involved in the work that 'their' students do and youngsters in neighborhoods with a sports disadvantage are given the opportunity to develop themselves as well as the neighborhood and to participate in activities.
From its social commitment, the Smurfit Kappa Foundation supports the work of the Richard Krajicek Foundation. In collaboration with the University of Utrecht it has been established scientifically that the playgrounds have great attraction for children and have social significance. The close interpersonal involvement over the years has created a safe communal environment, which in turn stimulates exercise and social activity.
