Coram Beanstalk | UK

Beanstalk is a national literacy charity that has been working for over 45 years to provide high-quality one-to-one support to disadvantaged children at risk of falling behind with their literacy skills. Last year, over 3,700 dedicated volunteers supported over 13,400 children in eight regions across England, working to target the most severe pockets of deprivation.

Coram Beanstalk’s service is simple yet highly effective. They recruit, train and support volunteers to provide consistent, one-to-one reading support to children aged 3-13 who need help. Their reading helpers give the children the support they need to improve their reading skills, reading ability and confidence. Coram Beanstalk reading helpers are trained to recognise what challenges each child faces and tailor their sessions to support each child.

Each Coram Beanstalk reading helper works with an average of three children and provides consistent support on a weekly basis, for a whole school year. Together, they read, play and talk. With Coram Beanstalk's support the child's approach to reading and learning is often transformed with results such as:

  • 98% of schools agreed that their reading helpers helped children to improve their enjoyment of reading.
  • 99% of schools agreed that their reading helpers helped children to improve their confidence.
  • 97% of schools agreed that their reading helpers helped children to improve their attitude to reading.

This is why the Smurfit Kappa Foundation has generously donated a total of £10,000 to the charity in order to cover the cost of books and other related costs.
